Wow! ….2009….just gets better and better
Sunday 13/9 North Geelong Warriors beat Breakwater 2 v 1 in extra time in the GRFA Div 1 Final.
A physical and skilful display by North Geelong persisted over the Breakwater side which has a more youthful line up.
In the opening minutes North Geelong had 4 chances to break away including 3 one on ones with Lesic and the keeper and poor finishing let him down.
However the Warriors marched on and kept applying pressure all over the ground.
The defence was brilliantly marshalled by Colak who was demonstrative in keeping team spirit and focus on all day.
Colak commented, “We had our vote count Friday night at the club and had a little meeting. The guys were made aware that for us to win we have to get stuck in physically and let the opposition know we they weren’t going to win a 50-50 ball. The guys playing were playing possessed. I have never seen us win so many 50-50 balls. We were tactically strong and held our shape throughout.”
Mid way through the second half the Warriors received a penalty, which Roso converted with power and precision.
North Geelong went on to outplay the Eagles and several other chances presented themselves but the finishing touch wasn’t there. As the second half wore on injuries to Brnada and Lesic took their toll and substitutions were forced. With 6 mins remaining, a clumsy tackle gave the Eagles a penalty which was converted and levelled the scores. The game went into extra time and it was North Geelong who was quickest to regain composure a near miss by Sare was quickly followed up by some great ball movement which presented Roso with a tight angle and he finished with class again. The crowd were in raptures of delight.
North Geelong controlled the remaining period of extra time to take out the GRFA Division 1 title.
Colak again commented after the match, “Most of our guys were severely starting to cramp up. I was very proud of them, they gave everything on the day and deservedly won the game. It was an ugly game, lots of high long balls, hard tackling and the surface was shocking, a strong cross wind made it hard to play good soccer. To be honest I have never worked harder in my life for a win, I was mentally and physically spent.”
North Geelong were inspired by comments on the weekend by Breakwater of how they were looking to create history and going for a record 5 titles, I guess they’ll have to start again ater the tremendous result North Geelong created on Sunday.
Next Friday is the GRFA presentation night, which no doubt the Warriors will celebrate long and hard.
Congratulations Warriors that’s 4 titles this year GRFA Under 12 Div 3, Under 15 FFV, Div 1 GRFA and DIV 2 State League.
